Tips for Improving Fuel Efficiency

With gas prices skyrocketing all across the Houston area, drivers are looking for ways to save at the pump. Short of purchasing one of the fuel-efficient cars at Helfman Maserati of Houston, there are certain ways that you can improve your fuel efficiency just by changing the way that you drive.
Here’s a brief guide from our dealers on how to spend less at the pump.
Clear Out the Clutter
There are some items that you should always keep in your car, such as an emergency kit. However, adding as little as 100 pounds can reduce your fuel efficiency.
Shave off some vehicle weight by clearing out old backpacks, sports equipment, and golf clubs. Also, remove excess add-ons like roof racks, cargo boxes, and bike racks unless you are actively using them.
Slow and Steady
After you exceed 45 to 50 miles per hour, your car begins to lose fuel efficiency. It’s advisable to drive the speed limit and use cruise control whenever possible. Avoid fast acceleration and rapid braking.
Reduce Idling
You may have noticed that late-model Maserati cars at our Houston, TX Maserati dealership feature a stop-start ignition system. This allows cars to conserve fuel by automatically shutting down the engine when the car comes to a stop.
If your car doesn’t have this feature, avoid idling for more than one minute at a time, as idling wastes more fuel than restarting your car.
Check Tire Pressure
When your tires are underinflated, your car will have to work harder to reach the same speed. Thus, fuel consumption can increase by as much as three percent. When you bring your car in for Maserati service, we’ll make sure your tires are properly inflated.
