Why Are Lease Payments Higher Now?

Traditionally, one of the main advantages of leasing over buying a car outright has been the lower monthly payments that go along with leasing. However, if you have tried to take out a Maserati lease in the past few months, you may have noticed that lease payments are getting higher. Why exactly is this?
Here at Helfman Maserati of Houston, our team of Maserati finance professionals are happy to explain.
Vehicle Inventory Shortages and Lease Payments
The continuing vehicle inventory shortage that has been around since 2020 is impacting all corners of the automobile industry, including lease payments. Demand for new vehicles is higher than manufacturers’ abilities to keep making them, and to go along with that, pre-owned car inventory is shrinking. As manufacturer incentives decline and transaction prices rise, the inventory shortage has changed up the car leasing process.
According to J.D. Power expert Tyson Jominy, “Multiple factors are contributing, but the leading cause would be the lack of inventory that is pushing up prices, which can negate the payment advantage that leasing traditionally has over loans.”
The Advantages of Leasing
Even with the monthly payments of leases increasing, leasing still hold a number of advantages over buying a car outright. Leases often require no down payment, which is something that is difficult to achieve when buying a car.
Leasing is also a great choice for people who like to drive the newest Maserati cars when they are first released. When the lease comes to an end, you can choose to buy the car outright, return the leased car for a new one, or return the leased car and walk away.
